Renoteck Exteriors supplies and installs soffits and fascia during exterior renovations and new builds.

Although fascias and soffits are functional features, their visual prominence make them a design element that cannot be ignored or dealt with lightly. There are a variety of considerations that will determine your final selection in these structural features. Colour and material are two areas that have a dramatic impact. In addition the soffits will need to be venting or non venting depending on the location on the house to ensure proper moisture control in the attic.

What is Fascia?

The fascia is the long, straight board that you see running along the lower edge of the roof. The fascia is attached to the lower ends of the roof trusses. The eaves troughs are usually attached at the fascia. The fascia board is clad in a finishing material such as wooden board (HardieTrim), UPVC or sheet metal, that co-ordinates with the rest of the buildings’ exterior.

What are Soffits?

The word “soffit” means “something fixed underneath.” When we look at a house it is the horizontal surface under the main roof. Soffit also includes just about anything that has a visible ceiling such as a porch ceiling or the underside of stairs.

The soffit board is behind the fascia board. It is easily seen from street level. The soffits enclose the rafters of the roof to protect them and the attic from water and moisture, reducing mold and rot. Soffits are often ventilated to allow  air into the attic area, promoting circulation to limit moisture buildup and to help keep the house cooler in the summer.

Finally, the soffits serve as a barrier to prevent the access of bats, squirrels etc. into the attic area.
